FAQ

Find some great answers to some common questions families have about Forest School and our learning environment outside.

How many children are there on average each day?

We expect to have 8 children each day with a 4:1 ratio.

Are you really outside all day, everyday, in all weather?

We aim to be outside almost all day, every day, in all weather. But…sometimes there are storm warnings that we need to pay attention to and in those cases will move indoors. Other times, little fingers and toes need to warm up on very cold days or to dry out on very wet days. We have a temperature-controlled indoor classroom that will be used on average, about 20 to 50% of the time in winter months. Outside our classroom is a large, open-aired area. And 85-100% of your child’s time with us being spent out of doors May through September. That’s where all the good stuff happens!

Is forest school a good fit for my child?

For the majority of children, programs based in nature that is play-based and child-centered will be a wonderful fit helping children grow stronger, with increased confidence and resilience. Keep in mind, our school does not venture far until we are sure that all the children understand rules and boundaries. If you’re unsure, please contact us and we’d be happy to talk it through with you.

What gear does my child need?

You will find a detailed list in the handbook but, in general, your child will need to be prepared for a day outside. Regardless of the season, children will need to wear closed-toe shoes to protect their feet, as well as have rain boots for certain outings. Each child must have two spare changes of clothes for when they get wet/dirty during an activity. We will send home any dirty clothes so that you can prepare for the next day.

Our motto is "There's no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing."

What is your cancellation policy?

Forest Preschool: We need 30 day notice to terminate care. If your child is sick or takes a vacation tuition will not be refunded.
Summer Camp: There is no fee for cancellation up to 3 weeks in advance. Refunds given within the 3 weeks only if spot is filled by waitlist.
Forest Play-Care: We are unable to refund for drop-in care at this time.

How does my child use the restroom?

We don't have access to running water at our school. We have a potty tent with 2 different sized toilets. We call it our camping toilet it is very similar to what you would find at a campground.

We also will do nature bathroom breaks when in the forest we like to call it a "nature pee". On the occasion there is a bowel movement we always pack it out and have supplies on hand to do so.

We do keep clean warm water and soap for washing hands which we do before and after snack and lunch and for bathroom breaks. When we are on nature walks and do eat outside away from our classroom we will use sanitizer before eating.
